What Does the Bible Say About Parenting?

Parenting is one of the most demanding and tender callings there is. Scripture frames children as a gift and a trust, and offers parents both practical wisdom and the grace to lean on God when their own strength runs out.

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

— Proverbs 22:6

“These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.”

— Deuteronomy 6:6-7

“You fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

— Ephesians 6:4

“Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward.”

— Psalm 127:3

“Fathers, don't provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged.”

— Colossians 3:21

Scripture calls children a 'heritage' and a 'reward' from God — a perspective that can renew weary parents. On the long, ordinary days, it helps to remember that the little ones in your care are entrusted to you by God Himself, and deeply loved by Him.

Deuteronomy paints faith at home not as a formal lesson but as a running conversation — when you sit, walk, lie down, and rise up. More is caught than taught. Children learn what we love by watching how we live, not only by what we say.

Paul balances instruction with tenderness: nurture them, but don't provoke or discourage them. Grace-filled parenting holds both truth and warmth. And when you fall short — every parent does — the same God who gave you these children offers you fresh mercy to keep going.

A Prayer

Father, thank you for the children you've entrusted to me. Give me patience, wisdom, and tenderness. Help me point them to you in the everyday moments, and cover my shortcomings with your grace. Amen.
