“Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.”
— Isaiah 41:10
“For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
— Psalm 23:4
“Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:9
“Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?”
— Psalm 27:1
When God tells Isaiah's people not to fear, He immediately gives the reason: 'for I am with you.' Courage in the Bible isn't the absence of fear — it's the presence of God. The valley is still dark in Psalm 23, but the shepherd is walking through it too.
Fear shrinks our world down to the size of the threat in front of us. Scripture widens it again, reminding us who is actually holding things together. The same God who upholds you with His right hand isn't surprised by what you're facing.
You may not feel powerful today. But Paul reminds Timothy that fear isn't your true inheritance — power, love, and a sound mind are. Step forward into the next hard thing knowing you don't go alone.
God, when fear closes in, remind me that you are with me. Strengthen me, steady my mind, and help me walk forward in courage because you are holding my hand. Amen.
