What Does the Bible Say About Marriage & Relationships?

From its first pages, the Bible treats relationships as sacred. Whether you're married, dating, or building deep friendships, Scripture calls us to a love that is patient, humble, and committed.

“Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn't envy. Love doesn't brag, is not proud, doesn't behave itself inappropriately, doesn't seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil.”

— 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

“with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

— Ephesians 4:2-3

“Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.”

— Genesis 2:24

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn't have another to lift him up.”

— Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

“Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.”

— Colossians 3:14

When Paul describes love in 1 Corinthians 13, he doesn't start with feelings — he starts with patience and kindness. Biblical love is less about butterflies and more about how we treat one another on ordinary, difficult days. It's a choice we keep making.

Every relationship runs into friction. Ephesians gives the maintenance plan: humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another. Unity isn't the absence of differences; it's the commitment to stay tender through them.

Ecclesiastes reminds us why this matters: we were not made to do life alone. The right relationships lift us up when we fall. Whatever season you're in, ask God to help you love the people in front of you the way He has loved you.

A Prayer

Lord, teach me to love the way you love — patient, kind, humble, and faithful. Strengthen my relationships, heal what is strained, and help me be someone who lifts others up. Amen.
