What Does the Bible Say About Loneliness?

Loneliness can ache even in a crowded room. The Bible speaks tenderly to that ache, promising a God who sets the lonely in family and who never once leaves our side.

“Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

— Deuteronomy 31:6

“God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing.”

— Psalm 68:6

“Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

— Matthew 28:20

“Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.”

— Psalm 139:7-10

“Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.”

— Psalm 25:16

The Psalmist doesn't hide his loneliness — he prays it out loud: 'I am desolate and afflicted.' That honesty is permission for us. You don't have to pretend with God. He already knows, and He draws near.

Psalm 139 is one of the most comforting passages in all of Scripture. There is no place you can go where God is not already present. Even in the deepest low, His hand is leading you and His right hand is holding you. You are never truly alone.

God's heart is also to set the lonely in family. Sometimes the answer to loneliness is His nearness; sometimes it comes through His people. Both are gifts. If you're isolated today, ask Him for His presence and for the courage to take one small step toward community.

A Prayer

Lord, in my loneliness, remind me that you are right here. Thank you that I can never wander beyond your reach. Hold me, comfort me, and lead me into the family of people you have for me. Amen.
