“Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
— Matthew 5:4
“He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.”
— Psalm 147:3
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.”
— Revelation 21:4
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
— 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Jesus called mourners 'blessed' — not because grief is good, but because God meets us there with a comfort the untouched never know. Scripture never tells the grieving to 'get over it.' It tells them they are seen, held, and not alone.
Psalm 34 makes a stunning claim: God is closest to the brokenhearted. When you feel furthest from everything, you may in fact be nearest to Him. He doesn't keep His distance from your pain; He draws toward it.
And there is hope on the horizon. Revelation gives us a picture of a future where death and mourning are gone for good, and God Himself wipes the tears from our eyes. Grief is real, but it is not the end of the story.
Father of all comfort, you are near to me in my brokenness. Hold the pieces of my heart. Comfort me in this loss, and give me hope in the day when you wipe away every tear. Amen.
