What Does the Bible Say About Depression?

Depression can drain the color out of life and make even hope feel out of reach. The Bible does not look away from that darkness — it speaks honestly to it, and points to a God who stays near when our strength is gone.

“Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.”

— Psalm 42:11

“The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”

— Psalm 34:17-18

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.”

— Matthew 11:28

“But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”

— Isaiah 40:31

“For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.”

— Psalm 30:5

The Psalmist talks to his own soul: 'Why are you in despair?' He doesn't deny the heaviness — he names it out loud, and then he preaches hope back to himself. Faith isn't pretending you feel fine. Sometimes it's quietly telling your weary heart to keep hoping in God when feelings say otherwise.

Scripture promises that God is not distant from the depressed; He is 'near to those who have a broken heart.' When you feel crushed and far from everything, you may in fact be closest to the One who saves crushed spirits. You are not too low for Him to reach.

Jesus offers the simplest invitation to the exhausted: come, and find rest. He doesn't demand you fix yourself first. If today all you can do is take one small step toward Him, that is enough. The night feels long, but joy is on its way.

A Prayer

Lord, in the heaviness I'm carrying, draw near to my broken heart. When I can't find the strength, renew it. When hope feels gone, hold it for me. Give me rest, and lead me gently into the morning. Amen.
