“No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:13
“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:12
“If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”
— John 8:36
“Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don't be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”
— Galatians 5:1
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
Paul refuses to be 'brought under the power of anything.' That's a striking way to think about addiction — not just as a bad habit, but as a rival master. The good news is that we were made to belong to a better One, whose service is freedom, not bondage.
Scripture is realistic about temptation: it's 'common to man,' so you're not uniquely broken for facing it. But it also promises that God always provides 'a way of escape.' You may not see it yet, but there is a door out, and He is faithful to show it.
Lasting change rarely happens alone or overnight. Recovery often comes through honest community, wise help, and daily dependence on God. Whatever cycle you're caught in, the One who makes 'all things new' can begin a new story in you — one step, one day at a time.
Lord, you know the chains I've struggled to break. Thank you that your freedom is stronger than my habit. Show me the way of escape, surround me with help, and make me new. I trust you one day at a time. Amen.
