“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
— Romans 15:13
“It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”
— Lamentations 3:22-23
“but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: and hope doesn't disappoint us, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
— Romans 5:3-5
“Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.”
— Hebrews 11:1
“Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.”
— Psalm 39:7
Paul calls God the 'God of hope' — hope isn't something we manufacture by trying harder; it's something He fills us with. When your own optimism runs dry, hope can still abound, not by your power but by the Spirit at work in you.
Lamentations was written in the rubble of a ruined city, and still it sings: His mercies are new every morning. Hope doesn't require good circumstances. It rests on a God whose compassion never runs out, no matter how dark yesterday was.
Romans makes a surprising claim: suffering itself can produce hope, because it forms perseverance and character along the way. The hope built in hard seasons is the kind that 'doesn't disappoint,' because it's anchored in a love that has already been poured into your heart.
God of hope, fill me with joy and peace as I trust you. When my own strength fails, let your mercies meet me new each morning. Anchor my heart in a hope that will not disappoint. Amen.
