What Does the Bible Say About Money?

The Bible talks about money more than almost any other subject — not because God needs it, but because our hearts so easily follow it. Scripture invites us to hold money loosely and trust God deeply.

“Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, "I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you."”

— Hebrews 13:5

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can't serve both God and Mammon.”

— Matthew 6:24

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

— 1 Timothy 6:10

“Honor Yahweh with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase: so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.”

— Proverbs 3:9-10

“My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

— Philippians 4:19

Scripture is careful with its wording: it's not money that's the root of evil, but the love of money. Wealth itself is neutral — it can build hospitals or break families. The question is whether it serves us or rules us.

Jesus is blunt about the stakes. You cannot serve two masters. When money becomes the thing we trust for security, identity, and peace, it quietly takes the place God was meant to hold. Contentment is the freedom of having only one master.

The beautiful flip side is provision. The same God who asks us to be generous promises to supply what we need. Honoring God with our finances isn't about earning His favor — it's about trusting the One who already cares for the birds and the lilies, and cares far more for you.

A Prayer

Father, free my heart from the love of money. Teach me contentment, make me generous, and help me trust you to provide for every need. You are my security, not my bank account. Amen.
