Before love is ever something we do, the Bible says it is something God is. 'God is love' — not merely loving on His good days, but love at the very core of who He is. Every ripple of real love you've ever felt traces back to that source.
That's why 1 John can say 'we love because he first loved us.' We're not asked to conjure love out of thin air or earn it from others. We receive it freely — most clearly at the cross, where Christ died for us 'while we were yet sinners' — and then we have something to give away.
Paul's famous words in 1 Corinthians 13 bring love down to earth. It's patient, kind, not easily provoked, quick to forgive, slow to keep score. That's the shape of love in a real marriage, a hard friendship, a strained family. Ask God to pour His love into you today, so it can flow out to the people right in front of you.
Father, thank you that you are love, and that you loved me first. Fill me with your love until it overflows to others. Make me patient, kind, and quick to forgive, and help me love the people around me the way you have loved me. Amen.
