Hebrews defines faith as 'assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.' Faith isn't the opposite of thinking — it's confidence in what's real but not yet visible. Like trusting a chair to hold you before you sit, faith is trust that acts.
Jesus makes a freeing point about size: faith like a mustard seed — one of the smallest of seeds — is enough. God doesn't ask for heroic, doubt-free faith. He asks for a small, honest trust placed in a great God. It's not the strength of your faith that moves mountains, but the strength of the One you're trusting.
And faith is a gift, not a performance. Ephesians reminds us we're saved by grace through faith, not by earning it. So on the days your faith feels thin, don't strive harder to muster it up. Turn back to God and ask Him to grow it. He is faithful even when we are faltering.
Lord, I believe; help my unbelief. Grow my faith even when it feels as small as a seed. Teach me to walk by faith and not by sight, trusting that you are good and that you reward those who seek you. Amen.
